Stick to Your Goals During the Summer

It’s getting warm and the last thing you want to do is sweat even more during an intense workout. But – and we hate to be the bearer of bad news – while it may be tempting to swap your squats for sangria in the sun, you have to be consistent to see results…even in the summer.

So fill up that water bottle, get yourself ready and take down some notes. We have a few easy ways to stay on track with your diet and exercise all year round.

Set the goal and book it in the calendar

Make a goal for yourself – whether it be the duration of your workout, the frequency or the difficulty level – and make that top of mind when planning out your week. Schedule workouts and put aside a few hours on specific days for meal prep. Treat these as non-negotiable and you'll be more likely to follow through.

Take it outside

We live in one of the most beautiful places in the world, after all. If we don’t take advantage of the amazing outdoor recreation here, is the rent and grocery bill even worth it? Skip the Stairmaster and go for a session on the Coquitlam Crunch with a friend and for low-impact options, a swim at one of the local beaches is an awesome workout. It’s great for your mental health, too, and can give you that much-needed vitamin D boost.

Make it a group thing

Nothing makes exercise fly by better than when you have a great friend to share the experience. Whether it’s a walk in the park to catch up or a training session at the House with your workout buddy, having a friend in the mix keeps you motivated and accountable.

Stay hydrated and take advantage of our seasonal produce

When you’re working out anytime, but especially during the warmer months, you’ve got to rehydrate. Flavour your water with what’s in season to make it more appealing – you can add berries, lemons, limes and more. Or leave the water as is and have that fruit on the side. Taking advantage of the amazing produce we have in season during the warmer months will make it a breeze to stay on track with your nutritional goals.

Be realistic

It’s going to be hard to pass up on events or beach days to go to the gym, so be realistic about what you are going to do. Try and stick to a consistent schedule and aim for 30 minutes or so a day of exercise – and that can include walking. Enjoy the barbecues but make smart decisions so you’re not sabotaging all your hard work. And listen, we’re never going to tell you to skip out on a margarita, but sneak in some water in between bevies so you don’t dehydrate. It’s all about balance.

If you still need help – we’ve got you. House of Trainers has an incredible lineup of personal trainers who can help you build out your schedule, create custom workouts and meal plans and get you in gear for a great summer. Learn more here.
