Stay Safe When Exercising in the Heat

It can be tough to get a sweat going when you’re already sweating due to the heat. With the temperatures getting higher and higher each day as we inch towards summer, it’s more important than ever to plan ahead to ensure you enjoy a safe workout while staying on track with your fitness goals.

Avoiding heat-related illness is a priority, so when you’re working out in the summer months (or even spring… hello climate change), make sure you follow these tips to stay healthy, safe and on track with your fitness goals.

Timing is Everything

Plan your workouts during the cooler parts of the day if you’re working out in the great outdoors – think early morning or later in the evening when the sun is not bearing down on you. And don’t forget that sunscreen!

Hydrate

You should be making sure you’re getting lots of H2O no matter what the season, but when the heat waves start rolling in, you should increase your fluids to replenish the water you’ve lost while sweating.

Get in the Water

A great way to stay cool while getting a workout in is water aerobics or simply swimming a few laps. The low-impact exercises are great for your joints and the water will keep you cool.

Listen to Your Body

Despite all these great options, the biggest thing you need to focus on is how you feel. If you’re feeling dizzy or nauseous, take a break immediately. If you get heat stroke, it will set you back with your workout goals much longer than taking it slow would have
