Six Common Foods Causing Roadblocks in Your Weight-loss Journey
Not all foods are created equal. You’ve probably heard that before, and you can see the impact when you’re tracking your meals. For example, a bowl of chips sadly has more calories than a bowl of snap peas. So until we find a way to switch that, the focus on nutrient-dense whole foods is a great general rule when it comes to your diet, especially when your goal is weight loss.
Now you know us – we believe in everything in moderation. But there are definitely certain foods or drinks that can stop you from hitting those milestones you’ve set out for yourself. So when you take a look at your food diary, see if you’re including too many servings of the following:
Sugary drinks
This includes sodas, energy drinks, fruit juices and yes, even alcohol. These drinks are high in calories and sugar, and they can quickly add up and contribute to weight gain. Instead, opt for water or herbal tea. And when it comes to the vino, try and drink in moderation. We all know what a hangover binge looks like – and it’s definitely not the best fuel for your body.
White bread
White bread is made from refined flour, which means it has been stripped of its fiber and nutrients. This can lead to spikes in your blood-sugar levels, as well as increased hunger. Try switching to whole-grain bread or other complex carbs, like sweet potatoes or quinoa.
Processed treats
Excessive calories aside, fried foods can be a source of trans fats, which have been linked to heart disease. Try cooking your food in healthier ways, such as using an air fryer, or try grilling, baking and steaming.
Fast food
Just like those processed snacks we noted above, fast food can be high in calories, unhealthy fats, and especially sodium. The obvious preference would be to cook from home, but if you are on the run, aim for options that will fuel your body in the right way – think protein, greens and whole grains.F
Candy
This one is in a league of its own. We know people tend to have a sugar craving late in the afternoon when energy levels are low. But remember, those gummies are a source of empty calories and sugar. It can also cause spikes in blood sugar levels and increased hunger. Instead, plan ahead for that sweet tooth and pack some fruit or dark chocolate to satiate that craving without all the refined sugar.
